Farmers gave irrigation jobs to boost income during crisis

The Royal Irrigation Department will take in another 60,000 additional temporary workers in a bid to generate income and employment for farmers during the Covid-19 crisis.

Temporary irrigation workers earn Bt8,000 per month.

The government has approved a budget of Bt4.49 million for the department to hire 88,838 farmers around the country, deputy government spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said on Thursday (April 23).

Since the application opened in March, the ministry has employed 28,623 farmers – 32 percent of the target figure.

Their duties include maintenance, dredging to improve irrigation channels, water construction for irrigation systems, water quality management, and disaster prevention and mitigation.

The duration of employment shall be 3-7 months at Bt377.85 a day or Bt8,000 a month.
