Industry Ministry confirms face masks for distribution are of high quality

The Industry Ministry has reassured citizens that millions of its face masks set for distribution are of high quality and will offer protection from airborne droplets that may carry Covid-19.

“The fabric used to produce the masks has been certified by the Thailand Textile Institute as hygienic, with no odour, soft, not causing irritation, and of not less than 0.5 millimetres thickness,” explained Warawan Chitaroon, ministry deputy permanent secretary, on Tuesday (April 28).

“Also, the material for the masks weighs at least 80 grams per square metre but not more than 220 grams –which would result in difficulty breathing.”

“The ministry’s cloth masks also passed security and air permeability assessments, so people can be assured they will be a barrier against secretions from coughing or sneezing.

She said that Thailand Post will deliver 5.45 million masks to registered Bangkok households.

“We have [also] asked provincial governors to distribute 2.5 million masks to people in Bangkok’s surrounding areas and risk-stage areas, as well as the appointed authorities to distribute 2.05 million masks to staff and employees who are at risk of infection,” she added.

“Meanwhile, manufacturers are going to send masks to the ministry by May 7 this year.

She revealed that production costs were Bt6.08 per mask while Thailand Post was charging Bt7 million for delivery – higher than the budget allocated.

Residents can check the delivery status, report any problems, or order more masks at the department’s Web site: or www.หน้ากากไทยต้านโควิด.com, by telephoning (02) 202 3737, or via the ministry’s Crisis Management Centre, she added.
